Important Update: Ontario’s New Elevating Work Platform (EWP) Regulations Take Effect January 1, 2027

Big changes are coming to workplace safety in Ontario. Beginning January 1, 2027, the Ministry of Labour is introducing O. Reg. 117/26, a strict new standalone regulation under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) that completely overhauls how Elevating Work Platforms (EWPs) are managed, trained, and operated.

As an employer, supervisor, or operator, it is critical to understand that traditional, generic third-party safety certificates will no longer be enough to guarantee compliance.

What the New 2027 Regulations Require:

  • Type-Specific Theory & Practical Training: Third-party training providers must deliver an updated, comprehensive curriculum that includes both theory and hands-on practical evaluations for each specific type of EWP an operator will use. A blanket certification will no longer suffice.

  • On-Site Equipment Familiarization Forms: Even after receiving third-party certification, the law places ultimate responsibility on the employer. Before an operator can touch a machine on a job site, they must complete an equipment familiarization form on the specific make and model they will be using. This ensures operators are fully capable of handling the exact controls, safety devices, and emergency lowering systems of that specific unit.
